Website Our website provides information about AFP and our activities, in addition to tree planting, upcoming events, and seasonal tree-care tips for the Alamo area. Our website educates users on simple actions they can take to help improve our urban forest. Tree Trunks Tree trunks are a great opportunity for schools or youth groups to learn about the importance of trees and their benefit to our air, water, energy, storm water and wildlife. These trunks have learning tools such as leaf flash cards, fun books about trees, and follow a certified curriculum called Project Learning Tree. Video To maximize the educational outreach efforts, we plan to develop a comprehensive video that will educate the general public on the environmental benefits trees provide our community, and how to select, plant, and care for the trees in our region. Tree Inventory We plan to reverse the tree loss trend in our community by taking inventory of our existing tree resources and monitoring the placement of new plantings. Maintaining our records in a GIS supported program will enable us to analyze our tree canopy and quantify the associated environmental benefits. In July 2009, the AFP sponsored its first Regional Urban Forest Conference, which is intended to be an annual event. Watch this site for information on the second annual conference to be held during the summer of 2010. The conference is designed to bring interested parties together to discuss issues and combine resources and expertise to improve San Antonio and surrounding communities. The Arbor Day Celebration
in San Antonio is held annually in November. The celebration for 2009
will take place on November 7 at the Claude Black Community Center in San
Antonio from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. The goal of this event, which is open to
the public, is to distribute a minimum of 150 free trees and provide an
educational class on tree planting and caring. Tree planting will
begin at 8 a.m. and a festival with informational booths will open at 10
a.m. |
